Secrets Our Eyes can reveal

May was Vision Health Month. We at Vine Eye Care acknowledge the importance of taking care of your eyes and sight, and we can offer information on a variety of relevant services, from where to seek assistance with purchasing necessary eyeglasses to adapting to vision loss.

"According to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), 50,000 or more Canadians lose their sight each year. But vision loss can be prevented 75 per cent of the time if detected early, says the CNIB."

Early detection can be achieved with regular eye exams by an optometrist.

"Optometrists can diagnose conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of vision loss among Canadians, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy, says the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO)."

An eye exam can also help identify other painless causes of vision loss or things that you might not expect, like hypertension, thyroid and vascular diseases, high cholesterol and even a brain tumour. Yes these are the secrets an Eye exam can reveal.

In addition to eye exams, there are other steps you can take to promote your vision health.

staying active,

wearing UV blocking sunglasses and protective eyewear while operating machinery and moderating alcohol intake can all reduce the risk of vision loss.

Smokers with a family history of macular degeneration run the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration three or four times more than non-smokers, says the CNIB, so taking steps to quit will not only benefit your lungs but also your eyes.
